How To Determine Your Skin Type In 2 Easy Steps

Do you find that you struggle with your skin, even though you follow a strict skincare routine every day? Perhaps your skin feels dry no matter how rich your lotion is, or you struggle with oil even though you're using an oil-free moisturizer; the problem could simply be not knowing your skin type.

For example, if you use deeply hydrating products and find yourself breaking out, you most likely have combination skin. By comparison, if you struggle with excess oil, you would assume that you have an oily complexion; however, there is also a possibility that the excess oil production is caused by using the wrong skincare products that can strip your skin's natural oils. In a situation like this, your skin overcompensates by producing too much oil to make up for the lack of oil in your skin, causing breakouts.

As you can see, not knowing your skin type can cause some real issues with your skin. Instead of scratching your head in confusion, read this handy guide to help you figure out what your skin type really is, as well as products that will help to keep it perfectly balanced.

The Steps

Step 1: First thing's first; you need to cleanse your skin of all dirt, oil and makeup to reveal your bare, beautiful and natural face before we can help you figure out your skin type. Use a mild and gentle cleanser (like our Clear Skin Foaming Cleanser), rinse with lukewarm water and pat your face dry.

Step 2: Wait an hour to allow your skin to return to its natural state, then dab gently with a blotting paper. If you don't have blotting paper, you can separate the layers of a tissue until you are left with just one layer, this works pretty much the same as blotting paper.

The amount of oil on the sheet will determine what type of skin you have. Now, let’s take a look at the results…

Dry Skin

If you find very little to no oil on the blotting sheet, your skin type is most likely dry. Also, take note of how your skin feels and looks; dry skin feels tight and stretched, and you may notice flaking around certain areas. Dry skin is more susceptible to the signs of aging, so using the right products are essential.

Oily Skin

If your blotting sheet shines like a disco ball under the light, chances are you have an oily complexion. Be sure, though, that the oil is coming from all over your skin and not just your T-zone. Oily skin has a shiny appearance and you’ll be prone to breakouts all over, even on your neck.

If your breakouts are seemingly unmanageable, we highly recommend our Clear Skin Kit, which contains everything you need to pave the way to clear and happy skin.

Combination Skin

Combination skin is more common than you realize, but all too often it’s misdiagnosed. If you find oil on your blotting paper from your nose, forehead and chin; but very little or none from your cheeks, it’s likely you have a combination skin. A good way to determine this is to pay attention where you tend to breakout; combination skin breaks out around the T-zone, but you may notice flakiness, or a tight feeling, on the rest of the face.

Our Suggestion:

Instead of using just one product, why not try multi-moisturizing to properly treat the different areas of your face? The benefits are worth it!

Sensitive Skin

This skin type may not always be mentioned, but it’s one that should always be included! Sensitive skin can have a slightly red appearance due to mild to moderate inflammation in the skin, depending on the severity. Sensitive skin flares up easily and has a limited array of products that can be used to help.

Our Suggestion:

The first step is ditching the harmful chemicals and switching to an all-natural skincare line, such as ours. Certain chemicals and fillers added to conventional products can be harmful to sensitive skin. Our next tip is to always patch test a product before using it on your face. Simply apply some of the product to the inside of your forearm or your neck, as the skin on these areas is thinner and more reactive, and then wait at least 24 hours to see how your skin reacts. If no redness or irritation occurs, you can feel confident to use it on your face.
